Intravesical Instillation of Heparin Cocktail
This is performed for the treatment of Interstitial cystitis or similar bladder pain syndromes. A small tube is inserted into the bladder through the urethra using local anesthesia. A cocktail of several medications is then instilled into the bladder and the catheter is removed. It takes approximately 60 seconds to perform but expect to be at the appointment for 15 minutes. You will be asked to hold the cocktail for at least one hour; you will not need to remain at the office for this length of time. There is no preparation and you may drive yourself to and from the appointment. After effects may include blood in the urine and slight urethral burning.
