Transrectal Ultrasound Guided Prostate Biopsy

A small ultrasound probe is inserted into the rectum in order to visualize the prostate. A local anesthetic is injected into the prostate. Several ultrasound pictures and measurements are taken and then approximately 12 needle biopsies are obtained through the probe, 6 from the right and 6 from the left side of the prostate. It takes approximately 5-7 minutes to complete but expect to be at the appointment at least 30 minutes. You can drive yourself to and from the appointment. Preparation includes an antibiotic for 5 days to start the day prior to biopsy and an enema to clear the rectum the morning of the procedure. After effects may include blood from the rectum and urine for a few days as well as blood from the semen for up to 6 weeks.
